Sewage Discharge Regulations For Boats
The Prevention of Pollution by Sewage from Boats Regulations came into force, and boat owners and operators may “only discharge sewage overboard when outside of the No-Discharge-Zones,” the Government said today.
A spokesperson said, “The Department of Environment & Natural Resources [DENR] can report ‘The Water Resources [Prevention of Pollution by Sewage from Boats] Regulations 2018’ came into force in August 2018.
“These Regulations apply to owners and operators of recreational boats, live-a-boards, charter boats and all other boats that sail or motor in and around Bermuda.
“As a result of these Regulations you may only discharge sewage overboard when outside of the ‘No-Discharge-Zones’, as shown in the figure below.
“Sewage may only be discharged outside of the near-shore areas [i.e. greater than 500 metres from the nearest land] in addition to outside of the more enclosed areas of Great Sound, Little Sound, Harrington Sound, Castle Harbour, Hamilton Harbour, St George’s Harbour and Fisheries Protected Areas.
“The options for discharge of sewage from boats currently include certain marinas, shore-side sanitation trucks or transiting outside of the No-Discharge-Zones. Details are provided in a DENR brochure available from DENR and Marine & Ports Services.
“The Regulations also require:
- An instruction sticker showing the ‘No-Discharge-Zones’ to be placed in a visible location adjacent to the toilet on board.
- The over-board discharge valve [i.e. Seacock] from the toilet and/or sewage holding tank to be located in the ‘Closed’ position whenever the boat is moored or anchored within the ‘No-Discharge-Zones.’
“The instruction stickers and brochures are available to be picked up from either the Department of Environment & Natural Resources in the Botanical Gardens or from the Boats and Mooring Section of Marine & Ports Services located in the old Paget Post Office, Middle Road, Paget.

sewage discharge areas should be at less 5 miles off shore like in the usa
Meanwhile the Seabright sewage line dumps more raw sewage in the ocean in one minute than all of the island’s pleasure boats do in an entire summer season.
No sh!t !
Unless we have high level sewage treatment on land instead of cess pits this is a meaningless effort. Unenforceable too.
And if you think people will abide I have some $h*t to pump down your throats.
You know how many vessels lie inside the harbors and sounds mentioned?
Thousands.
Pointless me saying anything further.
What about sewage discharge regulations for parliament?
That is different anyway that boat is sinking fast.
Well, from a Government that is full of sh## what would one expect but another unenforceable law. How about spending some taxpayer dollars on protecting the rockfish spawning grounds?
so you really you cant pee in your toilet and discharge it but I can stand on the back of my boat and let it go or if i want to be sneaky i sit on the swim platform …get real you have as much chance of policing this as the plp have in balancing the budget
silly waste of paper
What toilet paper ?
Indeed .
A boat with an overboard discharge head is the same as a boat with none at all !
And that’s why I don’t go to non mariners because stupid people like you s**t and pee overboard without care about those around you! So selfish and disgusting!
And when we get them all to stop it then we can go after all the fish ,turtles and birds constantly using our beautiful waters as their personal dumping zone !
A puff piece published by somebody trying to justify their position. Where are the pump out stations? Hundreds of boats with no holding tanks. Hundreds more that simply bypass the holding tank.
No boats can discharge but both Corporations can pump raw waste.
Forty Thieves.
Think about it and have a side of titty milk with rum.
Imagine both Corporations pump thousands of gallons of Sewage every day into our ocean but you cant pee and flush …who voted these dummies into power please show yourselves …stand up and be proud you are just as smart as they are , these are the same bozoos that have hired a UK barrister to come here 000,000 thousands boys and girls to try and overturn a human right that most right thinking countries have or will soon pass
Childish is at best how I can describe this circus
Bermuda is a joke
Anything to improve the environment makes sense but to put this into effect before there are adequate pump out stations being in place is daft. There was now warning that this was coming into effect so that people could take measures to comply. Who is going to enforce it? Our new non-existent coast guard? Please get real.
Well it about time we cleaned up our dirty stinky habits of polluting our ocean ! At least people, if they have a good KBB conscious…. Might do the right thing…!! Believe it or not human excrement is not racial. Some just sounds better !
Let us view waste managemenyat the airport too…below ground is below sea level.
